- On 2 November, the Asian 7 Countries Student Discussion for ESD began, with Japanese university students and others participating in discussions of ESD in English with students from other Asian countries (Thailand, the Philippines, Bangladesh, South Korea, and China) .
- On 8 November, the ASPnet Conference was launched, providing an opportunity for exchange among students from UNESCO Associated Schools around Japan and persons associated with ESD.
- Participants visited the cities of Osaki and Kabukurinuma, which are key bodies related to Regional Centres of Excellence (RCEs) in the Greater Sendai Area. The United Nations University has designated this area as a centre for ESD. The participants examined case studies of efforts to create a sustainable society through environmental education and environmental preservation.
Results of Exchange Activities: A delegation of 10 university students from five Asian countries and regions (Thailand, the Philippines, Bangladesh, South Korea, and China,) arrived in Japan with only an abstract understanding of the ASPnet and ESD. During an 11-day study period, however, the visitors met and carried out exchange with over 1,000 Japanese university students, elementary and junior-high-school students, teachers, members of the Education Board, civil servants and university professors, gaining specific knowledge of ESD at first hand. The assembled educators from five countries and regions enthusiastically conducted symposiums on ESD measures in their respective countries.
In the future, these 15 students and teachers can be expected to form part of a formidable network linking the universities and UNESCO Associated Schools in their countries and regions with universities in Japan. For their part, the elementary, high-school and junior-high students stimulated by these activities will be motivated to conduct their own efforts regarding the ASPnet and ESD, forming an effective educational movement.
